Scholarships for Health Careers

December 15, 2011

It is that time of year to stop and reflect on the many things we are thankful for. This week I want to highlight the volunteers of the George C. Grape Community Hospital Auxiliary who help to raise scholarship funds for area students who pursue a career in the health care field.

With a membership roll of more than 110 donors, the Hospital Auxiliary represents all of the communities in the Fremont County and Atchison County as well. They organize many fundraisers throughout the year and manage a gift shop at the hospital to help support the scholarship fund.

The Scholarship Committee will start taking applications on January 15th to award five scholarships in the amount of $500 each. Interested applicants should contact Teresa Woodward, 109 Moody Drive, Hamburg, IA 51640.

I also want to direct potential scholarship applicants to The Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) as another source of scholarship funds. Their program offers up to $3000 per academic year, or a maximum of $6000 over a two year period.

In exchange for the IHA financial support, scholarship-winning students agree to work in an Iowa hospital for one year for each year they receive and award.

The IHA Scholarship information can be found on-line at www.ihaonline.org.
